The Teachings of Silvanus · Chapter 1

Reject the passions; follow the mind

1My son, listen to my teaching, and do not reject it. Open your heart and accept the words I say.

2Cast away from yourself the desires of the body, lest the body become a tomb for you. The body is from the earth; the soul is from above. Why do you let the body rule the soul?

3Live in the mind. The mind is your guide. The mind is the eye of the soul. Without the mind, the soul is blind.

4A wise man fears God, but the fool denies him. A wise man speaks little, but the fool talks endlessly. A wise man is rich without possessions; a fool is poor with all the wealth of the world.

5Do not be a hothead. Anger is fire that burns the soul. Be patient. Be still. Anger destroys; patience builds.

6Do not love money. Money is fleeting. Love wisdom; wisdom is eternal.

7Take Christ as your guide. He is the wisdom of God. He is the way. He is the truth. He is the life. He is the inner pedagogue of the soul.
